DVD Picture Show-Imaging Suite Top Quality

Everthing sounded great on the package but...

Timing the background music was ridiculous. I used the built in timing mechanism for the program (based on the length of the music and the duration of the slides) then previewed my work...it was all off. So I manually timed the music to the slides. That took forever because you can't jump ahead to different parts of the slide show, you have to go through the whole show each time. Plus, it was rarely the same twice. Sometimes the music ended on one picture, the next time it ended one or two pictures earlier or later, etc. etc. When I FINALLY got it worked out and just the way I wanted it (after hours and hours of trying), I triumphantly burned my show to a DVD. Guess what? When I played back the DVD, the music was completely off and I had to go back again two or three times to try and fix it and burn the DVD again. I went through several DVDs before it was finally right.

Actually, I don't know what problem(s) the above user (A software user from Manhattan Beach, CA USA) is talking about on the OS X installation issue. ACDSee 1.6 does install and operate under OS X and does not revert in any way.

Also it lacks many features of its Windows counterpart, which is actually quite good. Adobe Publishing Collection 11.0 [Old Version] Right now

Over the last several years I have had experience with Corel Draw, Photo Paint, & Ventura. I have also slugged it out with Paint Shop Pro 3.x,4.x,5.x &7.x, and Photoshop LE.

I tried the rest, but was driven to the best. The Adobe Publishing Collection does it all. Photoshop is the standard. Paint Shop Pro is a marvel for the Price, but Photoshop's interface is the clear winner if you are working with large numbers of images. So, too, the filters run immesurably faster in Photo Shop. On my machine, the Salt & Pepper filter in Paint Shop Pro takes 4,5,6 minuets in a large file (28 meg). In Photoshop (even LE), the filter runs in less than a minute.

Then there is PageMaker. This is the only way to do lay out. Working in layers, it is even possible to print your file as "text only" for proofing. Linked images work flawlessly. The commands and tools are simple and intuitive. Ventura is a nightmare by comparison....don't try it one without a manual. PageMaker also writes clean HTML and PDF files that may be all you need.

Still, Acrobat works tightly with MS-Word, Excel, etc. It even installs itself on the Word toolbar, ready to dump your Word Doc into a PDF file. I write my own HTML, converting lots of long doccuments. Often, an Acrobat file is just as efficient, preserves layout, and gives ultimate control. I have the feeling I might be writting less and less HTML code.

Illustrator? I have limited experience here, but am told my someone I trust that its capabilities are at least as great as Draw, and Draw is good.....this one, I am told, may be too close to call, but we are talking a "collection" here, with four great programs made greater by their collective strength.

Finally, the Publishing Collection is the real deal from Adobe. $600.00 for PhotoShop, $500.00 for PageMaker, $250.00 for Acrobat, $400.00 for Illustrator. Or-----buy the Publishing Collection and get them all for $999.00 or there abouts. The collection is the only way to fly!

Of all the "photo browsers" out there like Compupic, Ulead Photo Explorer, and others I can't think of the names of at the moment, this is far and away the best one I've seen. The browser alone (ACDSee 4.0) is excellent, but coupled with the rest of the Power Pack, it's a far better deal. There's probably some things other than what I'm about to mention that I haven't stumbled across yet since I've only been using this for a couple weeks. But I'll tell what I've seen so far.

This is a tough one to rate because it's basically four different programs. They interface with each other, but yet they're different. As I said, the browser is fantastic! You can do just about anything you need to within it. Move pictures from one location to the other, rename, resize, edit, and on and on. FotoVac allows you to download newsgroups and will then go into the ones you've subscribed to and download photos. And you know as well as I do that there's tons of newsgroups out there to pick from. FotoAngelo allows you to put together screensavers and slide shows. You can pull any photo from your files and make it wallpaper if that's what turns you on.

FotoCanvas is the actual photo editor. It's very basic. Being used to Photoshop 6.0 and PhotoImpact, I didn't think FotoCanvas would be much use, but actually it is. It's very handy for quickie stuff. You won't be able to get fancy in it though. If the photo editor was a program on it's own, I'd give it 3 stars.

If it was free, I wouldn't touch it. The old versions, when it was badged MGI photosuite, had their limitations but were relatively intuitive.

Now some clever clogs has changed the interface, reduced the options (I have Roxio 8), and the whole thing is an utter pain. You are not in charge. It's a slow learning curve, not at all user friendly, and almost seems to oppose everything that was good about MGI. If only they knew enough to leave it alone rather than turn MR Gizmo loose who has then ruined a decent enough program.

As a regular user of CorelDraw and AutoCAD LT, I was intrigued by Corel Designer, so I downloaded a trial version off of the Corel web site. After trying out the program, I came to the very quick conclusion that Designer should only be purchased under certain circumstances. And at the risk of sounding obvious, Designer is nothing more than CorelDraw with a limited number of AutoCAD type enhancements. With that being said...

PROS: For someome who doesn't own Draw or AutoCAD, it's a very nice cross between the two. It's comprehensive, easy to use, and accurate. It's perfect for individuals or businesses who need technical graphics without the high costs of owning both Draw and AutoCAD LT. From this standpoint, you can save a sizeable chunk of change by buying Designer; especially when one considers the cost of AutoCAD LT & the full-blown AutoCAD.

CONS: Owners of CorelDraw can pretty much do the same things in Draw that can be done in Designer; with only a slight bit more work. Designer carries a far too hefty price tag based on that.

BOTTOM LINE: If I were starting from scratch in regards to technical graphics or desktop publishing, and wanted AutoCAD type accuracy thrown into the mix, then Designer would be a very good place to start.

Two major concerns about this software:

1. Type of capture. Camtasia captures AVI files of your screen. This may be great if you require full motion capture, but consider the situations where you don't, like creating software demos. Camtasia will capture any erratic mouse movement, and the exact speed and accuracy with which you type. You can, of course, do some editing to try to compensate for these factors, but that's a lot of extra work. I have also discovered that if I excise a portion of captured video, I can't get a callout to span the edit, severely limiting what I can do in a demo.

2. Program performance. In the course of using Camtasia on just two projects, I ran into these problems:
a. It locked up while I was editing video, and I had to start over.
b. It "forgot" several edits that I had made during the course of a session and I had to re-do them.
c. It lost track of how long the source video was, and so I could not trim the end of it until I closed the program and restarted.
d. It ignored one of my "Save Project" commands, forcing me to re-do a half-hour's worth of work when I closed the session and came back to it.
e. There was the inability to place a callout noted above.

I also found the callouts available in Camtasia very clumsy looking and cumbersome to set up.

Buying Pinnacle Edition DV

I've been using EditionDV for about a month now and just finished my first DV->DVD project with it. Overall the experience has been very positive, with minial hiccups and no lost work or time due to the software.

Editing: My project involved merging 4 different camera shots of the same event into the finished product. Edition allowed aligning the clips from the different camera's very easily on the timeline. It allows allows you to protect the clips that you don't want to be messed with on the timeline. It's also got a good set of transition and effects which allows you to do a very professional job. Once I got the hang of the software using the Training CD (highly recommended), then it was easy to use. Pros: Very stable, creates great quality output on DVD. Cons: Documentation sucks, no tutorials or anything of the like and you don't find books on EditionDV in the stores like you do of Premiere. Pinnacle should really package the Training CD as part of the package.

Commotion: Pinnacle packages a great package which costs about [$$$] by itself for free. This is a great piece of software which allows you to develop composites. I used it extensively for creating professional looking titles and other intro clips. Pros: Great package with a lot of built in filters; Cons: Documentation (no docs in the box!!!)

Authoring & Burning: Impression Pro is another solid package which allows you do motion menus and overall has created DVD images which have been very compatible with set top players.

Overall a solid package for the serious hobbyist who wants to spend time and create professional looking DVD's. I was comparing it to Premiere, but Commotion and Impression for free was what made the choice an easy one. But Pinnacle really needs to beef up the documentation.
