Cheapest Picture Publisher 8.0

This is a great program. I have been using it since '92 when I stripped it out of Micrografx technical drawing package. It's a great general-purpose bit map editor that is easy right from the start. As you become familiar with how it operates the interface becomes very intuitive. Programs like Adobe require continual use in order to remember how to perform even basic operations, but I can come back to PP after six months of not using it and pick it right up again. Many of the wizards, effects and light studio options are particularly nice. Take a nice picture, apply a lighting effect and then use the "impressionist" paint wizard to produce a genuine work of art. Gota love this program.

Buying Photoimpact 4.2

Although this is a relatively old program, I'm still using Photoimpact 4.2 because of its ease of use, speed, and flexibility. The tool panel is easy to get to, and navigation flows very well. It's great for fixing up digitized images from negatives and slides, because the undo feature can go back to I think 6 or 8 steps if you don't like what you've "repaired." Changing dimensions, formats and resolution is very fast, and again, you can undo it quickly. I've never had it crash. When I first got v4.2, I had Windows 98. Now I've got Windows XP, and there are no problems as well. The results I get from using v4.2 are virtually indistinguishable from the results I've gotten from Photoshop 7. I don't do much in terms of special effects, but I've tried stitching images together, and pasting with excellent results. Picture Publisher has always been my choice of photoediting software and I have used most major programs with the exception of the last two releases of Photoshop. To put it simply Picture Publisher is one of the easiest programs to use and has more power than any other program except Photoshop.

I am prejudiced, however. I go back to the version one of Picture Publisher when it was put out by Astral. I was a member of the Micrografx user group in Dallas and was the leader of the group for several years. Until this last year I have been in close contact with many of the Micrografx employees. On the other hand, I have also worked with many other graphics programs and have reviewed several for the North Texas PC User's Group.

First, Picture Publisher is more intuitive to use than most programs. With the "how to" features in the wizards, almost any photographic manipulation function is a snap. Unlike some programs, the wizards allow a great deal of flexibility. If you want "quick and dirty" you can have it. If you want to exercise control, you have that ability too.

Second, Picture Publisher is powerful. Many of the "new" features in the high end graphics programs (read Photoshop) have been in Picture Publisher for years. Micrografx had objects several years before Photoshop. The task list through which you can edit any step of your photoediting session has been around for three versions of the program. These two features alone allow you almost infinite control over your images. With objects, you can define "things" in your pictures like individual people. These objects can then be processed independently of the rest of the picture. I can -and do- cut objects out of one picture and add them to another and retain full control of the object independent of where I put it. And I can keep this independence forever. The task list allows you to go back through an editing session and change single steps. If you darkened a section of your image several hours back and decide that it was not a good thing to do after several hours of photoediting, you can go into the task list, eidt out that step, and automatically redo all subsequent steps. The process to do this is simple.

Third, Picture Publisher is fast and does not make excessive demands on your computer. My old P133 with 48 Meg of memory can and does run Picture Publisher. While not blindingly fast, it is acceptable. On my PIII-600 all operations are done in real time including all the special effects.

The only disappointment in PP9 is that it is not a quantum leap over PP8. There are a few new features and many new wizards but overall the program does not have as many new features as have earlier versions of the program. Sure, the real time color channel manipulations make some things easier but overall there is no great need to upgrade from PP8.

For the difference in price PP8 is a slightly better buy, but with such a small difference in the cost, you might as well go for version 9. Compared to anything else on the market, either version is a steal.Get more detail about Picture Publisher 9.

I was impressed by the fancy graphics and menu effects, and the novel user interface of Kai's Power Show. But I was very disappointed with the functionality in a number of areas:

1. There is no built in Help, so one cannot search for the answer to a question, no FAQ list, no index. One must use trial and error to find out what the capabilities are and are not.

2. The product advertises compatibility with MS PowerPoint, but I did not find out until after purchase that the newest version it is compatible with is PowerPoint 97, now over 7 years old!

3. The product will not display the show full screen except on very low resolution monitors (640 x 480). Most displays and projectors are much higher resolution these days, and Power Show provides no way to up the resolution/size. It is a product that will not grow with your hardware.

Photoprinter 2.0 Best Quality

This software came with my HP printer. I was excited by the prospect of being able to print out quality photos. It functions adequately, I suppose, though a friend of mine has ULEAD, which works much better and comes with a more robust suite of features. You can add several pictures to a single page and then print them....whoopeeee. You don't need any help because that's basically all it can do.

The problem is, as I had with another ArcSoft product, the fact that their software seems to tweak your OS a bit. After installing Photoprinter and rebooting, I noticed a mild power flicker that wouldn't go away. Processing speed seemed to also slow dramatically. After uninstalling, my OS went back to normal. I decided not to risk a second installation.

I bought this product mainly for removing red eyes from my digital pictures, and it does not even work! I tried and tried, and nothing happens when I try to correct my pictures, which are in the standard .jpg format. They stay exactly the same, and I had some pictures with very bright red eyes. Buying Photo Express 4.0 Digital Studio

I've been using Paint Shop Pro for several years, but wanted to try Photo Express 4.0 for its red eye removal and printing capabilities.

I take mainly snapshots, and so need to remove a lot of red eye! While Photo Express's red eye removal tool is neat and works fine, it is quite clumsy going back to thumbnail view after editing a photo! You have to click the "mode" button then click "Browse", each time! If it used a standard MDI interface, like Paint Shop Pro does, the browse window would just be there when you closed the photo window.

Another gripe: the thumbnails are not stored on disk after they're created (like Paint Shop Pro does). Consequently, it has to recreate them each time you visit the directory, which can take awhile.

This set of filters is great for special effects. If you like creating abstract desktop wallpapers, it would be a shame passing on this piece of software.

I literally use this set of filters as a toy. Open a picture, pick a filter, tweak the options, run the filter, stare at your screen in amazement, rinse, repeat.

BONUS: This is a very little advertised fact, but the install CD contains both KPT3 and KPT5. Just choose custom install, and it will let you install KPT3 as well as KPT5. Double the fun! :)

A word of warning, though. Apparently some of the included filters (actually quite a few of them) do not seem to work with Photoshop 7. And I would not expect a patch to fix that, seeing as KPT5 is not really being supported by Corel anymore. KPT 6.0 Top Quality

Corel knew what they were doing when they acquired the KPT series from MetaCreations. The plug-ins work great for Painter 6.0 and Photoshop 5.5. They can be used for fun and for functionality. Just playing with some of the filters can inspire you to do something you've never thought of before.

If you own previous versions of Kai's Power Tools, don't delete them, they are not outdated... rather this is a new installment. I still have KPT 3 installed for the page curl and some other filters that are not included in subsequent versions. They should really call their software "Volume 6" instead of version 6. You can still use the old filters and the new versions are not redundant, but totally new and fun tools.

These aren't just for goofing off... as a professional web designer, I find them quite useful in spicing up banner ads and other images. The only reason why I've given this software a less than perfect rating is for the crazy, far from intuitive interface. The interface is still the most beautiful software interface in use today, but you really have to use this software a LOT to get used to what far-out looking button does what. If you already use Painter or another MetaCreations (now Corel) product, you won't be too confused, but neophytes will find the tools a bit awkward to use at first. I'm on my first day using this camera. The software would not connect to the camera to download anything, so I ended up taking a link from the Ixla website to get the twain driver for the camera before I could do much. For outdoor photography, the camera is fairly decent. For indoor photography...the camera would be better off not even having a flash. ScreenCam Best Quality

Lotus ScreenCam was absolutely a revolutionary product when it was produced years ago. I have used the product extensively under Windows 95 and NT, and it was absolutely terrific. The ability to capture large screen areas, the ability to play them back smoothly on another computer, etc. The problems started when I wanted to 'draw' on the movie, do fine-grained edits, or move it to a computer that didn't have the same fonts and icons. It would make a real mess. And forget Windows XP. It will not work reliably under Win98, Me, XP, or any of the newer "NT"-based OSes. All is not lost, however.

It appears that ScreenCam has now found a home with a company called "SmartGuyz, Inc", which makes an XP-compatible version. I've tried the demo version, and it is absolutely an answer to the problem of XP compatibility. The company also appears to have addressed the illustration and interactivity problems as well. The product looks quite solid. It seems to be using a new technology compared to the old Lotus product, since recording PowerPoint presentations and exporting it to another computer doesn't seem to have any font or icon dependencies. My dad got a new Epson CX6400 printer, and it came with the full version of this software for free. I do digital content creation for fun (photos, movies, audio), and i wanted to try this program out to see how well it worked, and to help my dad use it.

After using it for a few days, its interesting. Basically, this program is used to do very simple photo editing things. It has the features to do things like fix red eye... adjust the contrast/brightness , change the color, crop it, add text ... add "clip art", add a border. The features that i found interesting was the auto adjust feature. It would take a picture, and give you about 16 recommendations for the same picture. It has a file browser and other features that are common among other photo editors such as the Photoshop Magic wand tool.

For around thrity eight dollars, its a good deal if all you want to do is take a photo that you might have scanned in from your scanner, and do a few simple edits to it. It does that very good, with a simplistic look to it (it has pictures around options to help give an idea of what everything does). I highly recommend this for people who don't want to learn a lot in order to do very simple things. As always, a general understanding of the Windows operating system is always nice so that you know how the windows file system is set up, and how to use a windows program. Obviously, if you save a scanned picture to your hard drive, and you don't know "where" it was saved to, this program will not help.

If you want a few more settings, or if you have the extra money, i recommend you look into a program called Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. It has more features and is a little more complicated to use.

This software should NOT be used for anyone who wants to create their own pictures, or who demands advanced control over their pictures. There are other programs out there for that, such as Adobe Photoshop CS.

I replaced my computer and reinstalled PSPA5 deluxe which I'd bought from Amazon last year. I received several error messages during the installation but the program worked. Not only is this program great for beginners to start making their own web graphics, but it is also an excellent software to turn good pictures into portraits like the pros.

This program by far, is just shy of having all the bells and whistles of one of its top contenders: Photoshop CS2
One difference: You don't have to be a webmaster guru or photo fanatic to start making the program do what you want it to do.
My wife and I both agree, that the learning curve is definetly more difficult on Photoshop, than PhotoImpact, by far.

One other thing about this, is COST. As stated, PhotoImpact has basically all the extras and tools as its competitor Photoshop, but PhotoImpact costs less!. The cost of PhotoImpact and all its other free tools such as gif animator, cool 360, and Photo Explorer are even less than just an "upgrade" on the other software program. Why pay just for an upgrade code when you can have an entire set of tools at your disposal for a fraction of the upgrade cost? If you buy the boxed CD, you also get an in depth manual that helps to explain all the possibilities PhotoImpact 10 can do.

For anyone wanting to fix digital photos, or make their own web graphics without having a 4 year degree to figure it out, or spending way to much money to get the software... then this program is exactly what you are looking for!

Buying Pantone Eye-One Display 2

There is nothing more frustrating than enhancing your photograph to find out that it looks totally different when it comes out the printer... I went the Adobe Gamma route. The "try to make your monitor look like the print" method and neither worked. The problem is, most monitors and/or software based color correcting tools deal with Red Green Blue and... only one shade of each! Last time I looked, there are a whole lot more colors in the spectrum than RGB.

After much debate, I decided on the Eye 1 Display 2. I'm glad I did.

I was prepared for a difficult install after reading some reviews. I work in the computer industry and have seen some really un-intuitive installation programs, but I must admit, this one takes the cake. Hint... When you load the CD, make sure you choose the Color Match button or it will not load the drivers or install the program. To bad they don't tell you this anywhere. There is a really nice "online" Tutorial, though it doesn't help you install the program. It does tell you to disable Adobe Gamma, if installed, just not how. Thanks Google! I found it in MSCONFIG > Staurtup in XP Pro.

All that said. The results are AMAZING! At the end of the calibration, you can see a before and after calibration sample. Couldn't believe the "pop". It also comes with a snap on device that lets you calibrate your monitor with ambient light. It'll also support dual monitor setups. Most importantly... My pictures look exactly like what I wanted. Hooray!
